California State Fair
Competitions
The very first California State Fair took place in 1854 with the
goal to promote agriculture and to provide a place where
agriculturalists could share ideas and techniques. To enhance the
State Fair's exhibits, competitions were developed in a variety of
categories to determine which entries were the best in the West.
With that same
pioneering spirit, the
State Fair continues to
host unique and
world-renowned
competitions showcasing
a variety of industries,
including those that
extend far beyond
agriculture. Thousands
of awards are bestowed
annually in categories
such as fine arts,
culinary, youth,
technology and more.
However, the largest
State Fair competitive
programs continue to be
agriculturally-based, a
fitting tribute to
California's largest
industry.
